Thanks to the magic of Youtube (w00t Youtube!), I got to see the only part of the Grammy’s I was interested in. The show was highlighted by a brief performance of the Beatles “A Day in the Life” from the Cirque du Soleil show “Love” shown in the Mirage hotel in Las Vegas. The Grammy’s version of the Cirque show didn’t really capture how absolutely wonderful the Las Vegas version is.
My wife and I got to see “Love” on it’s first “test” night, completely by luck (well actually it was due to the ineptitude of Frontier airlines). Two weeks prior to our vacation Frontier notified us that our Friday flight had been bumped to the next morning. We went into frantic mode because we generally don’t stay in Vegas over the weekend due to the extreme bounces in hotel prices (or in our case our hotel was sold out for that night). After finding a suitable replacement, I discovered that the first ever public showing of “Love” was going to be going on that Friday, and surprisingly I was able to grab two tickets. So in the end it worked out for the best. To folks heading to Vegas, I can’t say enough about how wonderful this show is, definitely one of the best stage shows I’d ever seen.

MGM just announced a $3 billion development project in the tremendously rich city of Abu Dhabi. How rich is Abu Dhabi? To quote it’s Wikipedia entry, “Each of Abu Dhabi’s 420,000 citizens is worth $17 million (AED 62 million), and more than $1 trillion is invested worldwide in this city alone.”. Noticeably missing is mention of a casino which makes a whole lot of sense being that Abu Dhabi is the capital of an Islamic country. From the press release:
The MGM Grand Abu Dhabi will be strategically located at a prominent downtown waterfront site on Abu Dhabi Island. Once completed, the MGM Grand Abu Dhabi will feature unparalleled views of the city skyline as well as stunning panoramic views of the waterfront.
This initial phase will utilize 50 acres and consist of an MGM Grand hotel and two additional MGM branded luxury hotels each appealing to a distinct market segment. In total, more than 1,200 luxury guest accommodations will be developed in the first phase. The development will also feature a major entertainment facility, as well as high-end retail shops and world-class dining and convention facilities. The development will also integrate a variety of luxury residential offerings including waterfront residences with private yacht berths.

From the guys that brought us Cork’d, comes 14Trips which seems to aggregate luxury deals in a nicely designed website. They need a bit more content, searching for “New York” only returns 2 pages worth of deals, and I’m sure there’s a whole lot more luxury in that town. Based on their prior sucess with Cork’d I’m sure 14Trips will do just fine.
